Pastor Philip Heyer has been on the pastoral staff at St. Stephen's since February, 1998. Previously he served as Pastor of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Otsego, Michigan (1987-1998), Associate Pastor at King of Kings Evangelical Lutheran Church of Garden Grove, California (1984-1987), and as instructor at Michigan Lutheran High School in St. Joseph, Michigan (1982-1984).
Born in 1956, Pastor Heyer grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and received his pre-ministerial training at the worker training schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, beginning with his high school years spent at Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw, Michigan (graduated 1974). He attended Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin and following graduation in 1978 moved on to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin. His "Vicar" year of practical experience (3rd Seminary year) was spent at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Oshkosh, Wisconsin (1980-81). He was graduated from the Seminary in May of 1982 and entered the public ministry of the WELS that summer, his first assignment being to Michigan Lutheran High School.
Pastor Heyer is married to Kim (Bostrom), a native of Watertown, Wisconsin. Kim is a Registered Nurse (graduated from Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, Milwaukee, 1979), currently working in the Emergency Department of Watertown Regional Medical Center - UW Health Partners. They have two grown sons, Joshua and Andrew.
As the adminstrative pastor at St. Stephen's, Pastor Heyer's responsibilities are to coordinate the pastoral work and to work together with Pastor Stratman and Pastor Dorn in the ministry of Word and Sacrament, namely the preaching, teaching, and visitation work. Beyond that he is coordinator of St. Stephen's District Elders program, outreach and stewardship program.
